UV Damage and Nutritional Defense: What Supplements Can and Cannot Do

By The Gelagen Team · September 2026

UV radiation is the single largest external contributor to skin aging, responsible for up to 80% of visible facial aging according to dermatological research. Antioxidant supplements offer a supporting role, but it is essential to understand what they can and cannot do.

What UV does to skin

UVA penetrates deep into the dermis, degrading collagen and elastin. UVB damages DNA in the epidermis, triggering inflammation and increasing cancer risk. Both generate reactive oxygen species that cause widespread cellular damage.

What antioxidants can do

Vitamins A, C and E — all present in our formula — neutralize some reactive oxygen species before they damage cellular structures. Research shows oral antioxidant supplementation provides modest systemic photoprotection. The keyword is modest.

What supplements cannot do

No supplement replaces sunscreen. Period. The NIAMS is clear: physical sun protection (broad-spectrum SPF 30+, protective clothing, shade-seeking behavior) is the most evidence-based intervention for preventing UV damage.

Our position

Gelagen provides antioxidant vitamins as one layer of a multi-layer strategy: sunscreen first, protective clothing second, antioxidant nutrition third. We will never position our supplement as a replacement for proper sun protection.
