Supplement Interactions With Medications: What to Know

By The Gelagen Team · September 2026

Dietary supplements are not risk-free. They can interact with prescription medications in ways that affect drug efficacy, lab results and your overall health. Here are the interactions most relevant to multi-nutrient formulas like Gelagen.

Biotin and lab tests

Already covered in detail in our FDA warning article, but worth repeating: 5000mcg of biotin can produce falsely normal or abnormal results on cardiac, thyroid and other diagnostic tests.

Zinc and antibiotics

Zinc can reduce the absorption of tetracycline and fluoroquinolone antibiotics. If you take these medications, separate your zinc intake by at least 2 hours before or 4–6 hours after your antibiotic dose.

Iodine and thyroid medications

If you take levothyroxine or anti-thyroid medications, even small iodine doses (our formula provides 42mcg) can affect medication effectiveness. Consult your endocrinologist before combining.

B-vitamins and levodopa

High-dose B6 can reduce the effectiveness of levodopa (used for Parkinson's disease). Our B6 dose (2mg) is modest but worth mentioning to your neurologist.

The golden rule

Show every healthcare provider your supplement label before starting or during any medication adjustment. Our full ingredient list is available for your doctor to review.
